| Ramakrishna
param hansa |
As a priest of the
Kali temple at Dakshineswar he worshipped the Deity
with such intensity that She revealed Herself to him
and became his constant companion. He could talk, play
and joke with Her. He then practised not only the different
spiritual streams of Hinduism, like Vaishnavism and
Tantrism, but also other religions like Christianity
and Islam. He was able to revalidate by his personal
experience the Rig Vedic declaration, 'Truth is One,
the wise speak of It variously.' He became the prophet
of harmony of religions.
Great scholars and savants sat at his feet and imbibed
the grand spiritual truths he explained in an astonishingly
simple way. The parables he narrated with scintillating
humour are guidelines to all spiritual aspirants. He
specially trained a band of young men who renounced
the world, and after his passing away in August 16,
1886, formed the monastic Order, viz. Ramakrishna Math
& Ramakrishna Mission.

| Sri Sri Daya Mata |
Sri Sri Daya Mata
is the foremost living disciple of Paramahansa
Yogananda. A true "Mother of Compassion,"
as her name signifies, she has inspired those
of all faiths and from all walks of life with
the wisdom and great love of God conveyed through
her talks, writings, and recordings. Referring
to her first volume of spiritual counsel, Only
Love, the former Ambassador of India to the United
States, N. A. Palkhivala, wrote: "Sri Daya
Mata personifies love and compassion and the other
timeless values of Indian culture….Her speeches
are not dry academic dissertations on abstract
theological principles, but intensely personal
hymns testifying to her ecstatic vision of the
Creator."
Daya Mataji entered Paramahansa
Yogananda's ashram in Los Angeles in 1931. From
the beginning it was evident that Paramahansaji
had singled her out for a special role. He later
told her that he had given to her the same intense
spiritual discipline that his guru, Swami Sri
Yukteswar, had given to him - a significant remark,
since she was to inherit the spiritual and organizational
mantle that Sri Yukteswar had bestowed on him.
The great Guru's life came to a close in 1952.
In 1955, succeeding the late, saintly Rajarsi
Janakananda, Sri Daya Mata became president of
Yogoda Satsanga Society of India/Self-Realization
Fellowship. As spiritual successor to Sri Sri
Paramahansa Yogananda, she sees to the guidance
of YSS/SRF members, the training of monastic disciples
who reside in the Yogoda /Self-Realization ashrams,
and the faithful carrying out of Paramahansa Yogananda's
ideals and wishes for the dissemination of his
teachings and the expansion of his spiritual and
humanitarian work worldwide |

| Mother Teresa: Missionary of charity
aided 'poorest of poor' |
| "The Saint
of the Gutters." For Mother Teresa, who devoted
her life to the relief of the sick and the outcast,
earthly sufferers were nothing less than Christ
in "distressing disguise."
From an early age, the girl who would become Mother
Teresa felt the call to help others. Born August
26, 1910, in Skopje (now in the Former Yugoslav
republic of Macedonia), Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu
was the dau ghter of Albanian parents -- a grocer
and his wife.
As a public school student she developed a special
interest in overseas missions and, by age 12,
realized her vocation was aiding the poor.
She was inspired to work in India by reports sent
home from Jesuit missionaries in Bengal. And at
18, she left home to join a community of Irish
nuns with a mission in Calcutta. Here, she took
the name "Sister Teresa," after Saint
Teresa of Lisieux, the patroness of missionaries.
She spent 17 years teaching and being principal
of St. Mary's high school in Calcutta. However,
in 1946, her life changed forever.

| Sri Narayan Maharaj
ji |
I am coming to
the Western countries especially by the mercy
of my siksa-guru, Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Swami
Maharaja. After taking sannyasa in Sri Kesavaji
Gaudiya Matha, Srila Swami Maharaja came to New
York City in America. From there, in a couple
of years, he preached all over America, in European
countries, Australia and elsewhere. He established
preaching centers in the midst of the ocean –
in Hawaii. He did so in Canada in the mountains,
in forests and so many other places. He translated
many books, like Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Srimad-Bhagavatam,
Krsna Book and others. He did this in a couple
of years by the mercy of Lord Sri Krsna, Sri Caitanya
Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu. They sprinkled
upon him a special power, and thus he preached
very quickly. An ordinary person cannot do what
he did.

I have come to
light the lamp of love in your hearts, to see
that it shines day by day with added luster. I
have not come on behalf of any exclusive religion.
I have not come on a mission of publicity for
a sect or creed or cause, not have I come to collect
followers for a doctrine. I have no plan to attract
disciples or devotees into my fold or any fold.
I have come to tell you of this unitary faith,
this spiritual principle, this path of love, this
virtue of love, this duty of love, this obligation
of love.

| A. C. Bhaktivedanta
Swami Prabhupada |
A. C. Bhaktivedanta
Swami Prabhupada, founder-acarya of the International
Society for Krishna Consciousness, was born in
1896, in Calcutta, in a Vaisnava family.
His father, Gour Mohan De, named him Abhay Charan.
His father's only wish was that, Abhay would become
a devotee of Srimati Radharani.
Abhay studied under British colonial rule, finally
going to university to read chemistry. At university,
he became a supporter of Gandhi's movement to
gain independence for India. As a measure of this
support, he would only dress in white handloom
cloth, woven in India and furthermore, he declined
to accept his degree from the university.
Abhay married and went into business as a small
pharmaceutical firm to support his wife and family.
He met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta
Saraswati Goswami, for the first time in Calcutta
in 1922. Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati, took a liking
to Abhay and told him to devote his life to teaching
Vedic Knowledge; more specifically to preach Lord
Caitanya's message to the English speaking world.
Although, Abhay accepted, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta
within his heart as his spiritual master, it was
not until 1932 that he became initiated. He then
received both harinama and mantra diksa at his
initiation.
In 1936 Srila Prabhupada wrote his spiritual master
requesting if there was any particular service
that he could render. Srila Prabhupada received
a reply to that letter containing the same instruction
the he had received in 1922: 'Preach Krishna consciousness
to the English speaking world'. His spiritual
master passed away from this world two weeks later;
thus leaving these final instructions engraved
on Srila Prabhupada's heart. These instructions
were to form the focus of Srila Prabhupada's life.

Sri Sri Paramahansa
Yogananda was born Mukunda Lal Ghosh on January
5, 1893, in the holy city of Gorakhpur, Uttar
Pradesh. From his earliest years, it was clear
that his life was marked for a divine destiny.
According to those closest to him, even as a child
the depth of his awareness and experience of the
spiritual was far beyond the ordinary. In his
youth he sought out sages and saints, hoping to
find an enlightened guru.
Go to Top
It was in 1910, at the age of seventeen, that
he met and became a disciple of the revered sage
Sri Sri Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri. Sri Yukteswarji
was one of a line of exalted gurus, with whom
Yoganandaji had been linked from birth: Sri Yogananda's
parents were disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya, guru
of Sri Yukteswarji. When Yoganandaji was an infant
in his mother's arms, Lahiri Mahasaya, had blessed
him and foretold: "Little mother, thy son
will be a yogi. As a spiritual engine, he will
carry many souls to God's kingdom." Lahiri
Mahasaya was a disciple of Mahavatar Babaji, the
deathless master who revived in this age the ancient
science of Kriya Yoga. Mahavatar Babaji, then
revealed the sacred Kriya to Lahiri Mahasaya,
who handed it down to Sri Yukteswarji, who taught
it to Paramahansa Yogananda.
